There are some books that you instinctively know are going to be a great read, and Mike Willmott’s book ‘Carp Life’ certainly falls into that category.
I’ve known Mike for quite a few years now, and I’ve always been impressed with his writings, his personality, and of course his undoubted ability to catch big carp on a regular basis. I’m sure Mike won’t thank me for saying that he’s been around the block a few times, one of the old school if you like, and someone who’s always on top of their game. Fishing is certainly a way of life for Mike, and this is undoubtedly reflected within the pages of this extremely impressive book.
The book itself is a detailed journey through Mike’s life as a carp angler, and contains a wealth of knowledge on so many aspects of carp fishing. It contains the perfect blend of technical content coupled with some very humorous stories. I was particularly consumed by his early day exploits as a road sweeper outside Harrods and his efforts to skive away from work early to go fishing! It reminded me so much of my early day adventures as a Dustman, and I couldn’t believe how similar our paths have been very funny indeed.
The two chapters on Ashlea Pool were absolutely superb, particularly Mike’s ‘close encounters’ with the Pool’s famous old carp, and how he was able to observe their behavior and habits at close quarters within the crystal clear water.
A real eye opener.
The book also includes an enlightening chapter about carp bait formulation, and it would be difficult to see how anyone could fail to learn something from Mike’s easy writing style. In fact, after reading this, you can see why Mike is one of the leading authorities we have on the subject of bait, whilst further reinforcing the fact that his company, Essential Baits, are one of the major players on today’s bait market.
Next in line is the guest section, and this includes excellent chapters by Jon McAllister, Simon ‘Frogger’ Lavin and Jim Lightfoot talking about their experiences on Wraysbury, Horton and Withy Pool respectively. The book then concludes with two more chapters from Mike, the first about his ‘Secret Affair’ with an unknown water, which was very atmospheric, and lastly, about his incredible success on a very difficult but extremely busy Park Lake, where he caught an impressive amount of ‘proper’ UK whackers – and tells you how!
The book is printed in full colour throughout, and I must say, the photographic content is superb, whilst the line drawings and sketches are simply stunning. What more can I say other than well done Mike on a superb publication. It certainly ranks right up their as one of the best fishing books I’ve ever read.
