Catch Reports 2008 page 3
Now we very rarely if ever include captures of foreign fish on this site because with so many big fish being caught from the UK on Essential Baits we don’t need to!! However, we’ve recently received pictures of some stunning Rainbow carp from Lee Woodfield that we are more than happy to accommodate.
Lee is no stranger to the big fish mecca having visited the place on a number of previous occasions and catching a few B5 whackers in the process. It was therefore no coincidence that Lee opted for the B5 on his latest 7-day mission. We’re not sure how many fish Lee ended up with, but we do know that towards the tail end of his trip, he ended up with mirrors of 56lb 8oz and 62lb, together with commons of 52lb and 69lb 8oz – the latter being just ounces short of the lake record! Well done Lee from all at essential.
This brings us nicely on to the fact that we can now confirm in advance that Essential Baits will be launching a shelf life version of the famous Shellfish B5 in 2009.
Over the Rainbow!
Mike Edgeworth fom Glos has been catching some cracking fish from a local gravel pit in recent weeks, one of them being this awesome fully-scaled mirror at 38lb 8oz!
This was one of his sought after target fish for the season so as you can imagine, he’s on cloud nine! The ‘Big Fully’ fell to long range tactics where Mike presented 3kgs of 20mm Shellfish B5 boilies to the marginal slope of an island.
Mike has since returned to the venue and has continued his run of big fish action. This time he concentrated his efforts on to a completely different area of the lake and was rewarded with another very big mirror – this one went 43lb 8oz! Once again, Mike’s successful bait was 20mm Shellfish B5 frozen ready mades.

Target Fish Nailed!
Lee Willmott has been concentrating his efforts on to a Southern river system in recent weeks where he’s been introducing the bait on a regular basis since July in search of a large scaley resident. The bait has been steadily introduced to several different stretches of the river over six miles apart in preparation for a September assault, however, Lee has been doing a few short sessions on each of these spots to see how the bait is working and was pleasantly surprised to nail his target fish at 37lb 8oz on one of these short trips!
A number of other good fish have also been banked during these short visits, which has made all the hard work, effort and expense even more rewarding. Lee has been using the B5-Squid version of the famous bait in 20mm and 24mm sizes in conjunction with Essential’s Rock Hard Balanced Wafter hookbaits to bank the big mirror.
Birthday success in Belgium!
Essential bait boss Mike Willmott decided to spend his 47th birthday on his favourite stretch of river in Belgium with son Lee and partner Rosie together with daughter Kelly and partner Dean. During the 7-night stay the team managed to bank a total of 43 carp totalling an incredible 1,000lb+.
The ageing bait boss would have had the biggest fish of the trip if he didn’t ask son Lee to look after his rods whilst he popped up the shops, however, it was Lee who took top honours by landing a stunning 42lb 4oz river mirror on Mike’s rod!!! However, Mike managed to make up for it just before they packed up by banking an awesome woodcarving like river common of 36lb 9oz. All the fish fell to a prototype version of the new Shellfish B5 shelf life boilies due to be released early next year.
The highlight of the trip for Mike however was being presented with a huge birthday cake that family and friends had made up as a surprise and somehow managed to hide away in the van without him knowing for 2 days!! The cake included an edible picture of Mike and his family holding the incredible Black Mirror. This was definitely the icing on the cake for an incredible trip!
Yet more forties for Finan!
We find it hard to keep track of just how many big fish Martin Finan catches, but let’s just say it’s one hell of a lot!! We know for a fact that it’s at least six forties during the past 5-months, with 3 of them going over 45lb and up to 54lb – that’s incredible, and if you tally up what he’s caught during the past couple of years, he’s probably the most successful big fish angler in the UK at the moment. All Martin’s fish have fallen to the ever consistent Shellfish B5 with Squid and Black Pepper.
His most recent conquest resulted in the capture of this magnificent 45.03 mirror, but wait for it…..since banking this forty, he has since returned to the venue to catch a 34lb common followed by a 45lb mirror!!! As you would expect, the B5 producing the goods once again. Is there a better ‘Big fish’ bait than the B5? You can bet your life there isn’t!!
B5 now nails lake record common!
Having been responsible for catching the lake record mirror from a difficult southern gravel pit earlier this year, the incredible Shellfish B5 has now gone and nailed a new lake record common from the very same venue!
The big fish fell to long term Essential Bait user Mikey Edgeworth and pulled the scales around to 42lb 12oz. Mikey is no stranger to big fish having caught an enviable amount of ‘forty pounders’ in recent years, and this latest big fish emphasises that a combination of a good bait and good angling will always produce the goods.
B5 nails another UK fifty!
Long time carper and BCSG member Andy Trim from Glos has recently banked the fish of a life time in the shape of this stunning UK fifty from a difficult Southern gravel pit. The big mirror pulled the scales around to 50lb 6oz and is a new fifty from the venue. ‘Trimmy’ has been carp fishing for over 34-years now and has been a good friend to Mike and the Essential team during this time. Being a little ‘old school’ he normally keeps his successes very close to his chest, but this was such a big personal milestone in his angling career, we finally persuaded him to publicise the capture and are extremely grateful to him for doing so.
The monster mirror fell to a bed of 16mm Shellfish B5 boilies fished towards the marginal slope of an island at approx 100-yards range. Mike and the Essential team would like to congratulate ‘Trimmy’ on his recent success and wish him continued success for many more years to come. Well in little fella – top B5 bombing!
