Yet Another First Forty for the B5!
The power of the B5 for nailing the bigger fish never ceases to amaze us and it’s produced the goods yet again. Lee Woodman from Somerset decided to tackle an undisclosed venue that isn’t renowned for big fish, and has certainly never produced anything close to the magical 40lb barrier – until now!!!
What makes this catch even more remarkable is the fact that Lee had never fished the venue before! He decided to bait his chosen swim with 3kg of Shellfish B5 boilies the day before he started fishing. The following day Lee presented his rigs over the baited spot and within just 10-mins of fishing, banked a new pb 40lb 4oz mirror – job done! Well done Lee, top angling and top B5 bombing!

Jon Mac departs Essential
Statement from Mike Willmott
“As from this moment, long term Essential Bait user Jon McAllister will no longer be part of our ‘Team Essential’ set up. Jon has been using Essential Baits for several years now, during which time he has become a very close friend of mine and everyone involved with Essential. His results since using our baits have been outstanding and he has undoubtedly become one of the country’s most successful carp anglers during this period.
I wish to make it clear that Jon’s decision to leave Essential has been for financial reasons only, and whilst we appreciate all the excellent publicity Jon has given us over the years, I have always made it clear that we have no interest whatsoever in paying anglers to use our baits.
That said, we fully understand Jon’s quest to become a full time angler and pursue a financial return from within the industry. Our friendship will of course remain as solid as ever and I would like to take this opportunity of thanking Jon for his support over the years and wish him every success for the future.”
Since using Essential Baits Jon has achieved an incredible amount of success and his list of big fish captures include 4 different forties from Wraysbury, (40.02, 41.00, 42.06 and 48.02) Heather the Leather (46.08) Black Mirror (53.02) Two-Tone (64.05) Stella (45.08) Northern Linear (47.00) The Annie (59.02) and The Mother (47.02).
Out With a Bang!
Following on from Jon McAllister’s record UK brace and for possibly the last time using Essential Baits, the Kent based big fish specialist has gone and done it again. He moved on to a Beds syndicate water in search of his next victim, ‘The Mother’, which hadn’t been caught for 9-months.
However, on just his third trip to the venue, Jon managed to bank a 37lb 8oz mirror shortly followed by his target fish at a weight of 47lb 2oz!! Once again, the incredible Shellfish B5 produced the goods for Jon, who will be sadly missed by all at Essential. Good luck for the future m8.
Hectic 12-hour Feeding Frenzy!
Martin Finan from Glos has been using the B5 for a number of years with some outstanding results, however, few sessions will probably be remembered quite as much as his recent one when he managed to bank five absolute crackers in a hectic 12-hour B5 feeding frenzy!
The biggest of the bunch was a 40lb 6oz mirror (pictured right) followed by a stunning 37lb 9oz common, but as if that wasn’t enough, he then went on to bank a 33lb 10z Fully-Scaled mirror, a 28lb 6oz mirror and a 26lb 14oz common. Now that’s what we call ‘short session success’!!
Second Forty from Venue
Bristol carper Terry Hancock has recently banked this superb 40lb 12oz mirror from a difficult West country still water. This is the 48-year old Fibre Optic Engineer’s second forty from the lake and fell to the Shellfish B5 with a customised attractor profile. Terry has enjoyed plenty of success from the venue and we’re sure his hat-trick forty isn’t too far away!
The big fish was caught from a silt pocket at approx 100-yards range over a scattering of approx 30 B5 freebies and a kilo of Essential Bloodworm pellets. Good angling mate and here’s too many more from where that came from!
Massive Linear!
Well known big fish angler and Essential Bait consultant Rick Golder has struck gold yet again. Rick is no stranger to big fish and is certainly no stranger to one particular linear that has found itself in Ricks net on a couple of previous occasions. However, on this occasion it bounced the scales around to an all time high of 48lb 2oz!!
Rick’s awesome late autumn capture fell to the winterised version of the Shellfish B5, but like most big fish that get a taste for the B5, they just keep getting tripped up on it time and time again. The Colne Valley carp will be pleased to hear that Rick is hanging up his rods until January for ‘new baby’ duties! Good luck with it all fella.

Its a Family Affair!
Essential Bait boss Mike Willmott has recently returned from a 5-night session on a Belgium river with his Son and Daughter, where despite cold frosty conditions they managed to bank a total of 19 carp. The highlight of the trip was this immaculate brace of commons weighing in at 36lb and 38lb 14oz. Proper Belgian beauties.
All the fish fell to the Winterised version of the Shellfish B5 which always seems to ‘kick in’ once the first few frosts arrive. The latest appearance of the West Country bait baron finally puts pay to any rumours that he has completely lost his marbles and is still hiding out in the undergrowth of a large Colne Valley gravel pit!!
First Time on Bait Produces a Forty!
It’s always nice to receive catch reports from customers but they don’t get much better than this one! Mike Rigby decided to use the Cream-CSM for a forthcoming campaign at Yateley Sandhurst complex. He’d never used the bait before but was obviously aware of its awesome winter track record. He decided to purchase some freshly rolled CSM, together with some Base Mix/attractors to roll his own.
Well what can we say! On his very first trip using the CSM, Mike managed to bank this cracking 41lb 6oz mirror – his first ever forty, and what a way to start!! But if that wasn’t enough, just a few hours later he managed to nail another whacker, this time in the shape of a 33lb 8oz mirror! Well done Mike, top angling son.
Cold-Water Common!
Long time Essential Bait user Dave Fuidge from Glos has recently started fishing a local gravel pit which holds some cracking commons. Despite little else being caught since the arrival of the first few frosts, Dave has been receiving a consistent amount of action on the Winterised B5. This includes a hectic short overnight session in sub zero temperatures, which produced a 4-fish catch topped by this superb 34lb common.
Dave has since been back and caught a number of good fish, even during high pressure clear frosty nights, testament that the coldwater version of the awesome B5 still continues to produce the goods when all other baits seem to die off. All of Dave’s fish have come from marginal spots with just a dozen or se freebies presented around each rig.
Overnight Success for Lee!
Essential Baits production manager Lee Willmott still manages to find the odd night to go fishing, and a recent overnighter on his own fishery, Springwood Pool, produced this stunning long common of 30lb 8oz. This is just one of a number of fish pushing through the magical 30lb barrier on the prolific Somerset venue.
Once again, a cold clear night of high pressure did nothing to stop the carp’s appetite when confronted with the Winterised B5 and adds to the growing number of reports we’ve been getting back from the Cold-Water range since November. Lee presented his rig and 4-bait stringer to a silty depression close to a weed bed at 30-yards with 20-free offerings loosely scattered in the area.
Like Father Like Son!
Just a few days after his son, Lee, managed to bank a 30lb+ winter common during an overnight session on their own Springwood Fishery, Essential Bait boss Mike Willmott replicated the achievement by catching this deep bodied common of 31lb 10oz. As with Lee’s capture, the fish came during a short ‘overnighter’ and fell to the ever-consistent Winterised B5 frozen ready mades in conjunction with matching pellets.
Mike fished the margins of a small bay where he introduced 20 free offerings and a couple of handfuls of quick break-down pellets during wet blustery conditions. The bite came during the early hours of the morning just a couple of hours after landing one of his small ‘stockies’ from the same spot.
